Also available on ipv6 now!

September 2nd, 2009 Peter van Arkel No comments

BIT (my employer) was kind enough to supply me with a block of ipv6, more than I, or 100 generations of my family to come, could possibly ever use. Anyway, if you whois 2001:07b8:0620::/48, you’re looking at my allocation :)

With this, I took the liberty of setting up a tertiary nameserver on cthulhu to help ns1 & ns2 with their jobs, as well as providing AAAA records to the world, so a lot of my services and websites I run are now available through ipv6, this blog not excluded (2001:07b8:0620:0080::6) Also, I made a small modification to the sidebar, it now shows which IP you’re coming from, so if you’re connected through ipv6 (With a native connection, sixxs or teredo, for instance), you’ll notice it right away. Of course, if you still don’t use ipv6 (alongside ipv4), try to be a good person and do so :) I’ll devote a post on how to use ipv6 later, but if you just search around on the internet, you’ll probably find more than enough info about it :)

So..

April 14th, 2009 Peter van Arkel No comments

It’s been a while since a last updated this blog.. It’s been hectic and I was also quite lazy at times I had plenty of time, but anyway;
Lloigor is gone, parts have been recycled and it’s now completely out of the rack. My workstation at home has been renamed Lloigor and he got a new little brother, Cthulhu.
Cthulhu really lives up to his name, it’s quite the monster, being a 5U Dell PowerEdge 4600. It has room for 8 hot-swap scsi-disks and also has 4 hot-swappable PSU’s, talk about redundant!
Also, very important: Cthulhu.oldones.net is the first one of the oldones that is reachable by native IPv6, supplied by my work, BIT BV. (Lloigor has a sixxs tunnel and Hastur has nothing yet.)
So, here are Cthulhu’s specs:

Cthulhu
5U PowerEdge 4600
1x 1,8 Ghz Xeon
4x 128 MB PC1600 ECC (this will be upgraded soon with an extra 4x 512 MB PC1600 ECC)
2x 18 GB Hotswap SCSI 15K RPM (RAID1 array)
6x 36 GB Hotswap SCSI 15K RPM (RAID5 array)
2x redundant PSU

2001:: An IPv6 Space Oddyssey

December 18th, 2008 Peter van Arkel No comments

After the cancellation of the IPv6 Taskforce’s “IPv6 Awards 2008″, the hope for more awareness about IPv6 was gone, at least for now. BIT thought this was really a pity and decided to throw a party of their own, the result was “2001:: An IPv6 Space Oddyssey”.
The seminar will be held in January, in Ede. Everyone interested is welcome, though it’s primarily targeted at ISP’s who are not sure about implementing IPv6 in their network yet, or just want to know more about it.
Amongst the speakers are people from Shockmedia, Microsoft, RIPE and BIT.
